After John Donne's "To His Mistress Going to Bed"

by Lisa Russ Spaar

What might she send - a wet sleeve,
or platter of brine-latticed bluefish

dusky with capers, lemons, wine;
a briar for your thumb, a mouth,

lunatic, to suck the blood:
a signal that one too often

inside & now beside herself with thoughts
of you wonders how she might woo

and through dew-whetted keyhole
pursue & sing & win? She is marvelous

with waiting. Come. Hunt here.
Relieve with hands and tongue her heavy hour

So, I got a rejection letter from the Whitworth (published yearly) JournalScript. It says that they "regret" to inform me that I will not be appearing in this year's issue but that they hope I will resubmit next year. Part of me doesn't really care because this is a peer reviewed journal and most of my peers (if you can call the 19-21 year old crowd that) don't get my poetry in class, so why would they when they are reviewing it for publication? But then part of me is like, if I can't even get published at my own school...how big of a loser am I?

Clang

Oh Noise,

could that be you?

I heard you around the corner

cooing in the gloves

hanging there by one frayed

red string.

I’m sorry,

you’ve been deserted

I realize you are the popular pin-up  these days.

But Silence is being neglected, I heard

the bareness in her cries-

silent and steady

throbbing sobs

that call to me in the moment

between sleep and standing.

Let her rise

to this occasion, let her trick

someone this time.

Let Silence be a force of presence.

Decline

I remove

and I bleed

for what I cannot say;

my words are too practical.

I try to stop

these sounds that arise

from the back of my throat

but all I can do

is grin.

It seems to work

until I find

the redwoods densely packed in my mind

and I wander, musing

waiting for ticks and sighs.

Lost I will be

until tomorrow

when the sun falls

to this side.

So, on the Today show today there were two people defending New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's involvment in a prostitution ring.

"Did you see his cheekbones! Those indicate a high level of testosterone."

Man next to her, "And because of these high levels of testosterone, decisions might be harder to make"

This of course is after (a very blonde) Dr. Laura said it is a woman responsibility to keep her man happy and if you cheat and a man retaliates, you totally deserved it. Interesting, n'est-ce pas?

So, Brett Farve is announce is retirement today at a 4pm et press conference. He is the reason I got into to football (yes I thought he was cute and yes, Lucas had a lot to do with it too, but when you only have four channels, football only won out over PBS on game days) but I also gained an apprecaition for a game that would have otherwise remained "male and barbaric" to me.

This makes me think of what was discusses in essay writing today about obituaries, that they are not only about death of a person, but the death of an era and Brett Farve's retirement is the end of a definitive and exciting time in the world of football. Now, I just need to figure out how I feel about this Aaron Rodgers...
