I found it interesting that such influential people were born and died on this day in various years.
On this day in 1867, Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska, was born in Warsaw, Poland. She grew up in a poor home, but her parents instilled in her a love of learning and a tenacious spirit. Madame Curie and her associates—including her husband—pioneered our understanding of radiation and atomic energy. She was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. "Nothing in life is to be feared," Marie Curie said. "It is only to be understood."
On this day in
1918, evangelist Billy Graham was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He heard a series of sermons about moral laziness when he was in high school, and
decided to devote his life to teaching the lessons he found in the Gospel.
And on this day in
1962, the world lost a great lady when Eleanor Roosevelt died. Adlai Stevenson spoke these words at her funeral: "She would rather light candles than curse the darkness, and
her glow has warmed the world."
